President Ellen called the meeting to order:
  • Sue presented the minutes of the February 28, 2007 meeting in Las Vegas.  There were no additions or corrections, and Martha made the motion to accept the minutes as read with Cathleen making the second.  The motion was approved.
  • Dave presented the financial report.  Please note ‘under income,’ the $66.55 is for interest from our savings account, and we should also be receiving about $4,000  from PAEMST shortly.  The records indicate: $18,586.56 in NMC Operations, and $10,000 in NMC Reserve Account.  Dave also presented a letter from the Nevada Chapter of the American Statistical Association (ASA) thanking NMC for our contribution to their K-12 annual poster competition.
BUSINESS DISCUSSED:
Affiliated Groups (AG’s) Reports:
  • CBMC:
    -have about 45 paid members
-have a ‘Make it/take it” workshop is planned for late October
-The NERPDP is planning their annual math and science conference in Elko, March 7-8, 2008.
  • SNMC:
    -have about 500 paid members
-are planning their P3 (Pizza, Pop & Problems) workshop November 13
-The HS Krypto contest was cancelled for now but will tie it with the MS Krypto Contest May 19,2008.
-on April 28, SNMC will be sponsoring a math contest including free response and computational problems.  This will be an individual contest with results posted (top 10), and the winner will receive a one-year’s tuition at UNLV.
-The Spring conference is scheduled for February 8-9, and the theme is “Space” with 3 keynote speakers (1 Friday night and 2 on Saturday).  The speaker proposal form is on the web with a deadline of December 1.  Elementary presenters are needed!  The conference will be held at Spring Valley HS.
  • NNMC:
    -have about 30 paid members
-just hosted their fall math and science conference, October 5 & 6 at Sparks HS.  There were about 40 participants, with Dr. Dave Thomas from UNR as the keynote speaker.
-Following SNMC’s example, NNMC also had a P3 (pizza, pop & problems) workshop with about 25 participants.
-On February 2, they will host their Breakfast and Math workshop, tentatively at the Atlantis Casino, with Dr. Cynthia Thomas as speaker
-will have their Math Awards ceremony on May 6.
-is sponsoring a speaker series: Improving Math Reasoning, at UNR’s Raggio Center. After each speaker there will be time for debriefing & discussion.
  • Higher Ed:
-There is a new director of the Raggio Center at UNR: Dr. David Thomas.
-An educational research conference (PMEMA.org) is scheduled October 27-28 at Lake Tahoe.  Contact Teruni for further info.
-UNLV’s Center for Math and Science, Clark County School District & UNLV’s College of Education are sponsoring a dual credit program between UNLV and Clark High School.  Students can earn 48 credits.
-UNLV and RPDP are co-sponsoring a Master of Education program.  Contact Bill for more info.
-Since teachers have changed how math is taught, communicated, and is interacting, there is a research project in its third year called the Northeast Nevada Math project.  This project will come to the northern Nevada area in the near future.
-At UNLV, there will be a pilot program from the Systems committee at UNLV to look at students’ success in college mathematics when they have completed Algebra 2 to see if it is a predictor for successful college math classes.  There will be a non-remedial math class offered at UNLV to help students make the transition into college level math classes and reduce the number of remedial-level math students.
  • Rural:    Churchill, one of the rural counties, has aligned the Standards with the testing timetable so teachers know when to teach certain standards in all the tested curriculum areas.
-Churchill County School District is also looking at textbook adoption with the upper grades wanting to renew the Saxon series.  Derek suggested going to the RPDP website as there is a link that bridges the gap between Saxon or any other series and the math standards.  This link will give supplements and references for teachers to bridge the gap to benefit students.
  • UNLV Student Group:      Bill reported this group as a student affiliate is a different type of community as it is unique as there is no permanent membership group.  There will be a membership kick-off in October and in January.  The mission is one of awareness that a support system is available for undergrad students in mathematics education.  Graduate students tend to participate in SNMC activities.
  • NMC:    Ellen presented a calendar of NMC events so far,  Also Lissa Draper is now Lissa Bzinak, congratulations!, and Cassie Dulmage was introduced a SNMC’s president elect.
State Report:   Carol Carothers is the new director of the Curriculum and Assessment group as Paul LaMarca has moved on to Washoe County.
  • There is a fear that the push is coming to have the consultants work strictly on assessment, ignoring the curriculum areas.
  • The Math Advisory Committee is still in the plans.
  • January 8-11, 2008, will be the re-coding of test questions in the test item bank, and will examine the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) coding system to see if it should be revised.  This will be in Las Vegas.
  • The Presidential Awards (PAEMST) for 2008 is for elementary teachers.
  • Senate Bill 184 requires 4 credits in math for HS graduation, but the decision as to what the 4 credits will be rest with each school district, although up to Algebra 2 is required all ready in 22 states.
  • The Leadership Academy has been scheduled for the summer of 2008
  • Content review and item writing are scheduled for June 23-27 (grades HS & 6-8), and July 14-18, (grades 3-5).
NCTM Resolutions:  There was a lengthy discussion as to whether NCTM speakers, at either regional or national conferences, have a ‘headstart’ on booking housing arrangements for the conference. Currently the housing registration is November 1, 2008 for the NCTM’s national conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, April 9-12, 2008.  Bill made the motion that after conducting some research, Derek will draft a rough of the proposal, with Kathleen making the second.  The motion was approved.  ***  By October 9, 2007, Bill had corresponded with Mark Workman, head of NCTM Convention Services, and Mark  said that there is a plan to add to the speaker home page that housing will open in early November and it is up to the speaker to make the housing reservation as soon as possible.  So, because of Mark Workman’s response, Bill has suggested we not draft a NMC-sponsored resolution at this time as it is the speaker’s responsibility to act diligently, and would like to rescind his motion on Derek drafting the resolution proposal.  Bill also stated that if anyone wants to resurrect this issue, then a new motion, second, and email ballot should be completed prior to the announced deadline.
OLD BUSINESS:
  • NCTM Western Region Conference will be located in the Convention Center, across from the Atlantis Casino on November 6-7, (Thursday & Friday) 2008.  The theme is “equity for all”, with a local theme of “It’s a sure bet!” because of Nevada’s gaming history.  Presenters are still needed – contact Derek for more info.
-Local volunteers are needed: equipment (overheads, projectors, etc.); meeting rooms (set up, posting, etc); publicity, etc.  About 100-200 volunteers will be needed.  Contact Martha for more info and to sign up.  Everyone needs to get the word out about the conference.  Martha has flyers, posters, and magnets for disbursement.
  • Since the conference is Thursday and Friday, districts need to know about the conference so perhaps one (or both) of the days could be for professional development so teachers could attend.  SNMC will pay the travel expenses for its presenters, and they will be asked to volunteer as well.  Those going to the NCTM conference in Salt Lake City will be asked to volunteer in the ‘push Reno’ booth.  Cherry will ask Churchill County School District (Rural) for one of the days is a professional development day.  The registration badges, we were told, can be scanned and an attendance list can be generated as proof of attendance.
  • Future meetings:  February 10 at Spring Valley HS, the Sunday after SNMC’s spring conference and in July 2008 after the Leadership Conference in Carson City.
NEW BUSINESS:
  • MET (Math Education Trust) Grant will continue to receive $100 gift each year.  The ASA Donation was not discussed.
  • There was a suggestion that web cams be acquired (about 3-4 for each AG, if needed) so NMC board members could “meet” more than the current face-to-face meetings twice a year.  Research will need to be done to determine what equipment needs to be purchased, what services do we need, where we will meet, etc.  A suggestion was made to have each NMC executive member have a web cam and each AG have 2 web cams, with no more than 15 web cams being purchased.  Cathleen made the motion to purchase the appropriate number of web cams after a successful trial run between Teruni, Dave, and Martha, who already have web cams. Cherry made the second.
  • Martha presented  pins to first time presenters for the NNMC’s conference.
  • Web Page:  Dave Thomas or Web2000 are two interested entities for designing a NMC web page, with links to each AG, NCTM, etc.  Having pictures of the NMC Board members (to associate faces to names) was also suggested.   Decision on the web page is to be tabled until more information is acquired.

There being no further business to be presented, Lissa made the motion to adjourn.
Respectfully submitted,
Sue Smith-Ansotegui, Secretary
